I recently configured a Dell 3115 to scan to a wired network using SMB (not FTP). I heard that this was very difficult to do, many hours had been wasted trying to configure it without success, etc. The reported error code was 016-783. It all boiled down to RTFM.

In fact, the configuration is easy. When I researched this matter on the Web, it appears that those having trouble are trying to put entries in both Share Name and Server Path when configuring scanning via SMB. Of course, it doesn't help when the Dell manual implies an entry is also needed in the Server Path field.

When configuring the Dell 3115 to scan to a computer via SMB, simply leave the Server Path field empty, and populate all other fields appropriately. Happy scanning!

Friggin' Adobe. Pretty good products that rarely need support. This is good because Adobe support can be terrible, as I just experienced.

I ran into an issue with Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 recently and discovered there was an update available for the product. From the Help menu in Acrobat Pro, I clicked Check for updates... It found the Acrobat update, and 5 other updates for Adobe products installed on my PC.

After installing the update, I tried to run Dreamweaver and received the "Licensing for this product has stopped working" message. Hmm. Tried Photoshop and received the same thing. Same with every program I tried from Creative Suite 3.

After trying multiple recommended fixes from adobe.com, I resorted to calling their technical support department. To put this part in a nutshell, I talked with at least 6 different people (all in India, by the way) and received multiple case numbers.

The big waste of time here is my trying to understand them, them understand me, and always having to confirm my email address, customer number, mailing address, telephone number, etc. even when being transferred within Adobe support. It was ridiculous.

In an attempt to save someone else from hours on the telephone with Adobe, here is how I fixed this issue in Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit):

1) Make sure you have the serial number for the installed product.
2) Make sure you have the serial number for the eligible product to upgrade from, if applicable.
3) Click Start, click Computer, double-click your boot drive (usually C: ), double-click Program Files, double-click Common Files, double-click Adobe, double-click Adobe PCD, double-click cache. Inside you will find a file called cache.db.
4) Drag cache.db to the desktop.
5) Launch an affected Adobe application.
6) Enter serial numbers, activate, register, blah, blah, blah.
7) Enjoy your Adobe product again.

My company has the above copier set up on the network as a printer and scanner.

We currently have one folder set up to recieve all scans. It gets very cluttered, because people don't delete their old scans.

I would like to set up individual folders within the scan folder for each user.
Then set up the scanner to have each user select there own folder and send the scan to that users folder.

I have set up some folders on the network, and I have set up the same folder on the scanner, or at least I think I have.
I can not get it to scan to that folder though.

Example:
the scan folder is on the SP-DOMAIN\scan

I set up the folders in this scan folder.
On the cannon copier scanner, I set up new folders, with the following settings
Host \\SP-DOMAIN\scan\userfolder
but it will not send the data to that folder.

Any help would be very appreciated.
Mike

Sorry, no. When the configurators were first created, Jay spared no effort to ensure their accuracy. After all, many dealers required sales reps to attach the output of a configuration to a sales order, so there was no margin for error.

As happens with many great individual efforts, once a large organization takes over managing such information, the personal touch disappears and there no longer seems to be a genuine interest in keeping the information accurate.

Back in the Ricoh field service days I always seemed to have a large territory. Living in the Atlanta area, I covered east to Augusta and west to Birmingham. When a call came in from Birmingham that I could not clear via telephone, I knew it was a minimum 6-7 (including travel) hour event.

One day I had a service call in Birmingham that should not have required anything more than a relatively quick trip into the account to repair, then grab a sandwich and eat during the drive back to Atlanta. Right...

As luck would have it, I had gotten a good description of the real issue with the fax machine from a temp who was in for the day. My regular contact was out sick. What I didn't know is that the machine had been moved into a different location within the office. It had gone from the receptionist's desk to a small storeroom where dusty conditions prevailed, and it had apparently been in there for a long time already.

When I saw the equipment I immediately knew I would be there longer than I originally planned, due to the amount of dust I found in the machine. It had to be torn apart pretty significantly to remove the dust balls from the mirrors and other parts of the optics path.

Somewhere during the repair process, my stomach started feeling funny, and I realized I needed to release some pressure. In other words, I had to fart.

Normally this would not be an issue, but I had the machine apart in such a way that I was not comfortable leaving it in that condition unless it was a REAL emergency. Complicating matters was the seemingly endless number of people streaming in and out to get supplies.

After a while of concentrating on the equipment, I happened to notice that no one had come in for quite a bit. I glanced at my watch and noticed it was now lunchtime in the central time zone. Whew! Nobody should be coming in for at least half an hour, so I figured I had time to do the deed and make a getaway.

After waiting about five more minutes just to be sure no one would walk in during the event, I let 'er rip. Just as I finished letting it fly, the door opened and an elderly woman walked in. Before I could even say hi, she made a face and exclaimed "Whew! It's stale in here."

Now I must admit it was everything I could do to keep myself from laughing out loud, so I quickly made up something about a chemical I used to clean the machine. Not exactly like paint thinner, perhaps more like a paint peeler.

I can't swear for sure, but I think she held her breath the rest of the time she was in there. After hurriedly retrieving what she came for, she exited the room. I counted to 10 and then couldn't hold back the laughter anymore. I imagined she was heading back for a quick hit from her oxygen tank. I managed to make it out of there before anyone else entered "The Chamber of Death", and never had to return to this customer due to transferring to a different division within Ricoh.
